Can You Get High of Hemp Flowers Usage

Because of the legalization of hemp in the US, people have become aware of it, and many ask, “can you get high off hemp flowers?” You cannot blame those people who ask this question because many people still feel confused about the difference between hemp and marijuana. Some even think that these cannabis species are the same.

For this reason, there are still some people who think that hemp can still get you high or smoking; it provides you adverse side effects. There is even this one article on CNN that although it stated that it would not get you high, it said smoking it would get you a headache.

However, is it true? Read more to find out.

Why the Confusion?

Before the 30s, there were no issues about the use of marijuana and hemp, even Presidents Jefferson and Washington grew hemp.

However, a Federal Narcotics Bureau commissioner, Harry Anslinger, ended it. Anslinger much opposed the use of cannabis. His reason for his opposition is not mainly because of the crimes committed because of marijuana. It was because of his hatred for other cultures and races, according to John C. McWilliam’s book, “The Protectors.”

Johann Hari’s book, “Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs,” revealed that Anslinger was running out of profit. The commissioner’s office focused on heroin and cocaine, which only a few people used them. The book stated that cannabis had become Anslinger’s ticket to a promising future if he could criminalize the use of it.

Anslinger connected the use of cannabis to Jazz music and race in his article “Marijuana, Assassin of Youth. He stated that the ones who used it were musicians, and their musical abilities were the result of the use of it.

Moreover, Anslinger was a nephew-in-law of Andrew Mellon, a banker and a Secretary of the Treasury. Andrew Mellon financed the Du Ponts’s petrochemical business that competed with the marijuana biomass fuels.

The commissioner appealed to fear, which he started with the white supremacists.

For this reason, his bill, the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937,  imposed a higher tax on hemp, which makes it almost impossible for American farmers to obtain the seeds.

By this time, although hemp was almost out of the picture, people can still identify the difference between marijuana and hemp.

However, it was in the 1970s when this distinction became vague when the passage of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), considering marijuana as a drug. Although the CSA exempted hemp from it, the court case HIA vs. DEA only considered fiber and non-viable cannabis seed not part of this Act.

What Makes Hemp Different from Marijuana

Now that hemp is back to the picture again. You need to understand what makes smoking hemp different from marijuana.

  1. It contains a higher amount of cannabidiol (CBD) and less amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

This fact answers the question, “Can you get high off hemp flowers?” because the answer is “No.”

Unlike marijuana, hemp contains a high amount of CBD and less than 0.3 percent THC, which is the psychoactive component of marijuana. In marijuana, the THC is a lot higher than CBD.

For this reason, smoking hemp with high CBD will not make you high.

  1. Hemp is fibrous, while marijuana is short and bushy.

The hemp leaves are skinny and have a seven-leaf pattern that you can find on the top part of the stalks. It is a large plant that can grow up to 20-feet tall.

Marijuana leaves are broader and have plenty of buds surrounding the stalks. Trichomes, crystal-like hair, covered the flowers.

  1. Growers breed them for different purposes.

Growers breed marijuana for the sole purpose of its recreational or therapeutic uses because of its high THC level. Although psychoactive, it still has a lot of benefits.

Yet, growers cultivate hemp for various purposes.

First, it is because of its CBD content, which is highly medicinal.

Second, it can produce textiles and fabric.

Third, its parts are useful for body products and food supplements.

  1. Hemp is legal now in the 50 states of America.

Donald Trump signed the Farm Bill in 2018, which legalized hemp in the USA, although there are still some restrictions to follow. However, marijuana is still illegal in a few states and controlled in some.

Currently, marijuana is still part of the Schedule 1 drug. Under federal law, marijuana and its derived products are still illegal, although it gives the liberty for the states how to regulate its use.

Can You Get a Headache from Smoking Hemp?

Because of the CNN writer’s claim that smoking hemp can give you a headache, many hemp advocates voiced out their opinions that it is not true. Even when she answered the question, “Can you get high off hemp flowers?” correctly, many hemp smokers said that it also could not get you a headache.
