Sci4Kids, an educational website operated by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) has a new look and feel. The redesign builds on Sci4Kids’ past success in educating kids about the importance of agriculture and science in their daily lives The website, which is primarily geared to youngsters aged 8-13, offers a “Teachers’ Desk” with classroom resources and activities designed to stimulate kids' learning about agricultural research. Weed-Sniffing Dogs Help Bust Invasive Plants
A field test in Montana pitted dog against human in an effort to identify and eradicate spotted knapweed. An article in the June issue of the journal Invasive Plant Science and Management reports that trained detection dogs can locate spotted knapweed more accurately and at a greater distance than humans. While dogs and humans were comparable in finding large- and medium-sized plants, the dogs had an edge in locating small plants.

Report reviews developments in state laws and regulations governing invasive species in eleven states. New Noxious Weed Booklets Available from Montana State University Extension
Three new noxious weed Extension bulletins are available that describe the biology, ecology, and management of Eurasian watermilfoil, hoary alyssum, and blueweed. These weeds are relatively new to the Montana noxious weed list and are limited in their distribution across the state. Therefore, awareness and education about these species is important to prevent further spread.

Insect approved to control Japanese Knotweed in UK
The website of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in the UK reports that an insect has been approved to stop the spread of the non-native invasive plant Japanese Knotweed. The website says that using an insect – which is a predator of the plant in Japan – to act as a natural form of pest control, will be the first time that a solution like this has been used to help control the spread of a non-native invasive plant in Europe.

Feds Propose Changes in Noxious Weed Regulations; Open to Comment
USDA-APHIS is proposing several changes to the regulations governing the importation and interstate movement of noxious weeds as well as expanding the Federal list of terrestrial noxious weeds.
