Center for Invasive Plant Management and the US Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuge System

Project Summary

In 2006, we began working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to develop online learning opportunities that help build knowledge about invasive plant management among of National Wildlife Refuge System staff and volunteers, other natural resource managers, and the public. The final products of the two-year collaboration are two websites comprised of learning modules that present science-based and topical information, case studies, quizzes, and web-based resources, which enable learners to explore topics more thoroughly.

The Websites

Managing Invasive Plants: Concepts, Principles, and Practices
The modules of this website provide an introductory overview of science-based invasive plant management concepts and principles, and illustrates practices implemented by the Refuge System and other land management entities. The modules provide a basic foundation from which to build knowledge about invasive plant management. More in-depth information of module topics can be acquired by exploring the provided references and resources.

Volunteers and Invasive Plants: Learning and Lending a Hand
The modules of this website offer a variety of information to help Refuge System volunteers and the public better understand invasive plants and assist in their management. Module topics range from the invasion process, to management methods, to tips for giving presentations to refuge visitors, and much more. The work and experiences of volunteers are showcased first-hand.

Since the website’s completion, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has developed touch screen displays from the website pages. Five displays are stationed at national wildlife refuges and one is a travelling display.

The website also received a second-place award in the National Association for Interpretation Multimedia Competition in 2008.
