Since our inception in 2000, CIPM has promoted an ecologically-based approach to the management of invasive plants. Ecologically-based invasive plant management requires an understanding of the biology of the plants and ecology of the system while focusing on developing and maintaining desired plant communities. This complex topic necessarily requires a multi-disciplinary approach to research.
Our research program promotes multidisciplinary scientific investigations that address both site-specific and regional-scale issues. This provides the foundation for new approaches to invasive plant management, as well as synthesizing and communicating research results to improve on-the-ground land management.
We provide services in: |
|
- Facilitating, supporting, and conducting collaborative research
- Organizing research symposia and workshops
- Communicating science by developing technical and educational publications and trainings (online and site-based)
- Managing a seed-money research grant program
- Technical writing and editing
CIPM’s research program supports and sponsors ecological and comprehensive invasive plant research and the implementation of timely technology transfer between land managers and scientists. Through a wide array of professional activities – such as, conducting, facilitating and supporting collaborative research projects, offering small research grants, sponsoring symposia, and creating science-based publications – CIPM has promoted improved, science-based invasive plant management over the past eight years. From 2001 to 2007, we awarded more than $650,000 in competitive, seed-money research grants to 76 grantees in 23 (primarily) western states.
In 2008, CIPM’s new director expanded the research component of our program. Research elements previously offered by CIPM (described above) have been retained, and in the case of the research grant program, will be reinstated. Additionally, steps have been taken to augment the program:
- Creation of the new staff position of Assistant Director for Research
- Actively pursuing research-targeted grants
- Building stronger research components into existing projects and partnerships
- Seeking collaborative, regional-scale research opportunities using in-house expertise and Center leadership

Outreach Services
Effectively communicating research results provides a critical link between research and on-the-ground application. Our sponsored research initiatives, education project collaborations, and technical writing and editorial services, have resulted in the publication of a number of books, peer-reviewed journal articles, online workshops and learning modules, and educational products.

Visual Communications Services
We offer services in developing visual elements to enhance the understanding of science and technical information for diverse audiences. Graphic and multimedia visual elements can be designed for posters, publications, presentations, and web-based materials.
