What Are the Differences Between Hash Weed and Marijuana

Many people, especially the novices, use the term hash weed and marijuana interchangeably. However, are this two cannabis the same?

Hash, dubbed as the ‘cognac of the cannabis world,’ is technically different from marijuana. Herb or ghanja are other names of it, and hashish is its real name.

Those who are already expert stoners and marijuana patients know the differences between them. Since marijuana has been a taboo plant for several years, it is understandable that many people cannot correctly identify the difference between cannabis and hash.

Comparison Between Hash and Marijuana

  1. Plant Source and Appearance

Hash and marijuana came from the same cannabis species.

Hash is a derivative of unpollinated female cannabis. It came from the extracted dried resins of the mature female cannabis plant. These resin glands called crystals or trichomes produce powdery substance.

It is available in the market, looking like blocks of cake or sticky paste.

Hash vary in appearance and may resemble different colors, which can be black, yellow, red, green, brown, and blonde.

On the other hand, merchants sell marijuana in the market as cured flowers of a female plant. Sometimes it is a mixture of the plant’s stems, leaves, flowers, and seeds.

Marijuana’s color is either brown, green, or greyish.

  1. Legal Status

Hash is less famous in the United States, but the law considers it as a drug.

In a federal and state level, the hash is illegal.

However, marijuana, although illegal at the federal level as a Schedule 1 drug, different states imposed different laws on its usage and production.

In the 29 states of America, marijuana is legal for medicinal use, along with Puerto Rico, Guam, and the District of Columbia. In eight states, even the recreational use of marijuana is legal.

  1. Uses

You can consume hash in three ways: either by smoking, vaporizing, and eating. Hash is oil-soluble, which makes eating the ideal way to ingest it.

Hash manufacturers also process the hash to become hash oil, which the users consume through vaporizing or smoking.

On the other hand, users can consume marijuana in several ways. They can use it for smoking, either through bongs, wraps, cigarettes, or anything else. They can also vaporize it through vapes, and they can use it as topicals because marijuana can also be available as creams, patches, and edibles.

  1. Process of Production

Producing a hash is more complicated than marijuana.

Manufacturers or growers produce marijuana by planting female cannabis and harvesting its flowers after 7 to 11 weeks, which is the flowering period. Next, the growers would hang the flowers out to dry. Last, many growers cure, trim, and package the flowers to be available for sale.

Hash weed production, on the other hand, adds a more challenging process. Instead of drying the buds after the harvest, growers separate the trichomes from the buds. Trichomes are hairy-like protrusion from the cannabis’s buds.

Growers separate these tiny hairs by filtering the plant using a sieve. After that, the growers will crush the filtrate, the extracted resin, either by hand or machine. Smashing it will release the oil.

Some growers add a more process to it by molding the filtered resin into a block to be available for purchase.

  1. Concentration

Hash is more potent than marijuana.

In a cannabis plant, the trichomes are the part where the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is more potent. As explained before, a hash is a concentrated resin from the cannabis plant. This resin came from the extracted trichomes from cannabis.

For this reason, a hash is more potent than marijuana. The hash’s THC content is from 20 to 80 percent THC, making it three times more potent than marijuana.

Marijuana, on the other hand, is available in the market as dry and cured leaves, seeds, or flowers. Therefore, the concentration of THC in marijuana is not as high as in the hash. The THC concentration in marijuana is from 2 to 35 percent.

  1. Price

Because the hash is more potent than cannabis, the classic hash is more expensive than typical marijuana. It is because when a user consumes hash, the effect lasts longer because of its potency. Also, producing a hash requires more effort than marijuana.

Is Hash Better Than Marijuana

No one can say if a hash is better than marijuana because the choice is up to the users. Some users want something more potent. For these people, a hash is advisable for them.

However, for those users who want something that provides mild high effects, they should look for other marijuana varieties.

Moreover, users should also consider the legality of these products in their country or state. They should be ready to face the possible consequences when they use hash weed or marijuana in their area.
